What Is Pressure-Treated Wood
Pressure-treated wood is softwood lumber that has been treated to resist rot, decay and termites. The wood is chemically treated in a special vessel that uses a combination of both pressure and vacuum to penetrate the wood with preservatives in a treating solution (either water or oil). The active ingredients commonly used in treated wood are alkaline copper quaternary (ACQ), copper azole (CA) or micronized copper azole (MCA). Through this process the preservatives are deeply absorbed into the wood cells which give the wood long term staying power against natural decay and the elements. The result is an exterior-grade wood that's ideal for building decks, fences, and other outdoor projects.
Benefits of Pressure-Treated Decking
Cost-Effective: Pressure treated decking is one of the most commonly used deck materials because it is cost effective and budget friendly in comparison to other options like composite or cedar decks.
Beautiful Aesthetic: Pressure-treated wood still retains the beautiful, natural appearance of wood. This type of decking can be stained with a variety of stains, as well, to bring together your full vision for your outdoor living space.
Long-Lasting: Pressure treated wood can have 5 to 10 times the service life of untreated wood, and can last for 20 years or more when installed properly.
Durable: Pressure treated wood safeguards your deck from elements like weather, moisture, and fungal decay. The preservatives protect your wood from the inside out which helps the wood to withstand the effects of all seasons; from heavy snowfalls to summer showers. The durability of the wood safeguards it from being easily scratched, dented, or damaged which helps prolong its lifespan.
Insect-Resistant: No need to worry about wood-boring termites or other wood-damaging insects with a pressure-treated deck. The toxins used to treat the lumber serve as a repellent to these problematic pests.
Ground Contact: Pressure treated wood is ground contact approved which means that the lumber has double the preservative levels, meaning twice the protection against termites and fungal decay. Pressure-treated wood can be used for decks that are low to the ground (6” or below).
